ᴄᴏʀɴᴇʟɪᴀ ꜰᴜɴᴋᴇ is one of my childhood literary heroes for providing me with the stories that would shape me and grow my love for literature in the first place. Stories like ᴛʜᴇ ᴛʜɪᴇꜰ ʟᴏʀᴅ and ɪɴᴋʙʟᴏᴏᴅ have taken me on my first literary adventures and will stay with me forever.

And this book in particular has been the very first one that I requested my parents to buy me. It's a Christmas story from the 90s and one of ꜰᴜɴᴋᴇꜱ earlier works, before she became internationally known, which is probably also the reason it hasn't been translated yet.

ꜰᴜɴᴋᴇ tells the story of nine year old Julia who instead of a chocolate advent calendar gets one with just boring pictures. But then she realizes that the pictures keep changing until one day she is sucked into the calendar. There she discovers a world of villains and heroes, in which a prince is ugly and a bald inventor of little planes wears colourful wigs. Where giants are gentle and dwarfs only want to play and sleep. It's the perfect story to get you into the Christmas mood, highlighted by ꜰᴜɴᴋᴇꜱ detailed illustrations.

This book is not just an all-time favourite but the book that first ignited my interest in literature and made me study harder to be proficient in the German language when I had been struggling before. Now I'm actually studying German literature and I do think that ꜰᴜɴᴋᴇ played a significant role in my education and further development. 💖
