All of these are pretty entertaining, and more of a high fantasy feel than you would usually get from a children's fantasy series.

What is not to love about the Redwall series? This is a nice entry for the series.

I'm not crying...that just sea salt...Redwall is one of the few series that can bring me to tears over a character's fate. I absolutely adored listening to the audiobook as the songs and accents really come to life.

Of the many Redwall books I have read, this one is my least favorite. The plot in and of itself was good. I enjoyed this "between" time frame where we get to see Redwall before Matthias, but after Martin. However, Mariel was a dis likable character to me. Her motivation through anger, though understandable, felt distasteful and her "redemption" from the angry storm to the 'civilized' Mariel wasn't believable enough for me. Overall her character left a bad taste through the entire story for me.
Despite my dislike of Mariel, however, I did enjoy various other aspects of the story and side characters. I loved the idea of two warriors and the antagonist's decent into insanity. I loved Saxtus' growth while remaining at Redwall, and was so glad for Danden accompanying Mariel.
I think my favorite "side arc" of the enter book was with the hares. <3 The serious tone of their arc gave me greater respect for their playful antics in others.
To summarize: If the story relied heavily on Mariel as a character/focus, I would have hated it. But thanks to the side characters and arcs I still found the story enjoyable.
