The genre is outside my usual, and I found the noir detective stuff kind of silly at times. BUT the worldbuilding is great so if you like detective novels and appreciate urban fantasy, give it a try. I do want to know what happens next for these characters...just not sure I will actually read the next book.

Chinatown meets Raymond Chandler's L.A. meets Alien Nation and Miami Vice - it's great and snappy and sets up its world/rules cleanly and quickly. One star off for me for several depictions of violence/animal cruelty that I found both unnecessary and veering a bit too close to horror for my taste, but if that doesn't bother you as a reader I think it's a 5 star novel. I hope Mr. Stout returns to Carter and Ajax in the future.

This book was completely out of my norm...not my usual genre. I read it for a book club and really enjoyed it. Stout piqued my interest quickly and made me get attached to the characters. He actually came to our book club meeting and it was fun to hear his thoughts on the book. I definitely plan to read the sequel.
