Hmm.. How to I explain perfection? Except to say that this was absolutley amazing... now i will say this though.. SLIGHT SPOILERS!!
Yes. This was an amazing read. But there are certain points that made me cringe a little. One. Everyone has heard of a love triangle, there is no YA romance without it. But this ladies and gents doesn't just have a love triangle. No it has a freak'in SQUARE!! You have our fantastic leading lady Mare. Our dashing bad boy Kilorn ( who though never says he loves her its so obvious that a bird could tell.) Our dashing king-to be Cal, and our oh so mysterious prince Maven. Now you might be starting on the whole. She likes more than one guy she must be a slut. if you think that leave cause i wont tolerate you saying that to my poor Mare-Bear. (Yes she has a nickname. And yes i might be a slight lunatic. you get use to it..) Anywho back to my review. This book is honestly all around amazing though. It has action, gore, Romance, fantasy and anything else you want to think of. even if it isn't futeristic WHO CARES! I love this book... (as seen by the rating above.) anyway i just love the family connection mare has and how she fights for what she believes is right. I hope you enjoy this as much as i did.

The book had a good plot and grabbed my attention from the beginning, but it just didn't stay as exciting in my opinion. I wasn't a fan of the ending in particular either.

That ending!
I found myself pretty easily drawn into it and couldn't put it down.
Mare Barrow's abilities are interesting. I often found myself thinking "how exactly is that happening? Does her power manifest like Spider-Man shooting cobwebs with his fingers?" She was also (thankfully) not consumed by grief and pity every 5 seconds. Sure, she did some questionable things that led to grave consequences, and while she realized she had made a mistake and felt bad about it, she didn't despair for too long.
Half way through the book certain red flags started popping up in regards to Maven. His mood swings and passionate speeches about the rebellion for one. I knew not to trust him, Mare knew she shouldn't trust him, and yet he weaseled his way in and fooled us.
I loved Cal and Mare's interactions. I was rooting for them. I sometimes doubted Cal, as did Mare, but ultimately I knew he wasn't manipulating anyone. His affection for Mare was transparent and it took her so long to notice. His mercy towards his enemies irked me because I know it is going to come back and bite him in the ass.
The ending was not only shocking, but also very sad. People who had interacted with Mare were killed even though they knew nothing or had not aided her in any way. It made me think about how we treat the families and friends of criminals (or anyone that messes up) just because of their link to that person. A lot of things in this book made me think about our society now and the similarities we share with this world Victoria has created. I'm sure that was deliberate and I appreciate that she did that.
Another interesting thing Victoria added in the book was technology. There was a marked difference in the technology that could be accessed by Reds and that of the Silvers. We saw those differences through the way Mare reacted to them. I loved that Cal is a dork when it comes to that. He built his own motorcycle and wants to learn how things work, he has a hunger for knowledge for the sake of knowledge and invention.
I'm very interested in the direction that the story has taken and look forward to seeing some character growth.
