I LOVE Adam Rex [b:Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich|18486|Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich|Adam Rex|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166956573s/18486.jpg|19892]. His illustrations are perfect for this fun story about a cowboy I can completely identify with.

I love Adam Rex. I didn't think I'd like the story but it was pretty cool and the art is, too!

Very funny and cute book, both in story and illustrations. Enjoyed it even more after talking with the author and hearing the true story that inspired this tall tale.

This book was funny, if a bit long.  A cowboy only takes a bath once a year.  He smells, is covered in dirt grime, bugs, and fungus.  He takes his horse and his dog on a long journey to find the nearest river in which to bath and instructs his dog to let no one near his clothes.  Once done with his bath, the dog no longer recognizes the cowboy and will not let him touch the clothes.  They argue, the clothes get destroyed and the cowboy walks home naked.  If you have not guessed already, this book is BANNED.  It is banned because of a naked cowboy.  The reader doesn’t see more than a bare chest and legs.  “Inappropriate” body parts are always covered by rocks, animals, or other things.  But that was not enough for some parents.  They compared this book to a child’s Hustler.  That description does not fit at all, but it was still enough to have this book pulled from school districts far and wide.

As the Cowboy is getting ready for his annual bath, he tells his dog to guard his clothes. But when he comes out of the river smelling clean, the dog doesn't recognize him. This leads to a donnybrook over the clothes the likes of which you have never seen.

This is a clever, funny book by Amy Timberlake. Boys will especially love the concept, drawings and all. And despite what certain moral minorities might say about banning this book, there is no full nudity in it. In fact, the clever ways in which Timberlake strategically covers any "private" areas only add to the humour.

Go get this.

Ordered this book to add to my selection of banned books. The writing was mediocre (⭐️⭐️), but the ways the illustrator came up with to cover the cowboy's genitalia and buttocks were very creative! (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Well, I guess I read a banned book to my son tonight.

Yup, this book has been banned.

There's an article here.

A news story here.

And an interview with the author here.

I thought it was a cute story...with great art by [a:Adam Rex|11137|Adam Rex|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1233600684p2/11137.jpg].

Banned? Good grief. Everyone should take a bath at least once a year...whether they need it or not.

Funny, clever...laugh-out-loud. A perfect blend of picture and words. Both enhance the other. On the surface, a cowboy takes his annual bath in the river and has to wrestle his dog for his clothes. But, under the surface is some tasty writing ("A flurry of flies flocked round his body buzzing so persistently that he experienced a distinct loss of hearing in his left ear...where was that sweaty, wild-boar-like smell that clung to the cowboy like a second pair of clothes...if a cowboy didn't smell like a cow, it ain't a cowboy...")and some of the most irreverent, coy, sly illustrations I've seen...

The cowboy is nekkid for most of the book, there's no doubt. BUT the naughty bits are always covered...by bubbles, by a bullfrog, a flock of quail, the cowboy's dog's tail..the game of 'peek a boo' is as much fun as the language! I had a ball reading this...

Looks like the trusty cow dog has a cataract...or his eyes are two different colors.

I would love to teach this -- the diction, the ironies, the figurative language all enrich this. And the illustrations are flat-out hilarious!!

No wonder SOME people are offended...it's funny, clever and good. Can't have kids reading something like this.

You'll see that I rarely read children's books. I don't have any children of my own so there's no need. The few I have read were read because the book was written by an adult writer I admire or it has some sort of LGBT slant.

I wanted to read this book because it was banned by the Annville-Cleona school board located in Pennsylvania. I'm amazed at what gets people all riled up, riled up enough to ban this award winning book.

The book is about a cowboy that is in need of a bath. He takes a bath but, because he no longer smells, his trusty dog no longer recognizes the cowboy's scent and refuses to let his master near his clothing. It was really charming, there was no nudity shown and I can't see why prudes in Pennsylvania want to ban this book.
