A charming story from another time. Whenever I pick up a classic like this,I am enthralled by the language and sentence structure. I love sentences that are a paragraph long! Alcott’s language is dreamy and lyrical, her story sweet and wise. Recommended for any fan of American classics.

Sweeter than sweet, in a very old-fashioned way. I like it, but it's nearly nauseating in various ways.

Such a charming and fun book. It seems to me that I made some new friends. A joyful and relaxing book.

3.5 Stars (as an adult, 4 stars as a child)

I would’ve enjoyed this story a lot when I was in Middle Grade. This book starts with two sisters enjoying a tea party. During the course of the party, they find that their cake has disappeared and they can’t figure out what happened to it. Later they find that a boy and his dog took the cake and friendship and adventure ensue. A fun lighthearted adventure full of friendship and found family that just made me smile the whole time I was reading it.

So this may be my least favorite Alcott of the several I have read, but I think it is simply because this book is more focused on a young boy, and I just couldn’t relate to it as well as Little Women or Eight Cousins. I think that it would be a great read aloud for children. I did like it overall, and the ending was so sweet I cried!

A story about two runaways - Ben Brown and his dog, Sancho - who escaped from a hard life in the circus to search for Ben’s lost father.
