I was surprised at how readable this book was, given how long ago it was written. Ethel Turner has a way with description and the whole book is written in a personal, relatable way. The effect is that, despite the few obscure references to items and authors long out of use/fashion, the reader is transported into the life of the Woolcot family in the developing outskirts of Sydney a hundred years ago. I quite enjoyed this book.
Moderate: Death
Minor: Adult/minor relationship, Alcoholism, Animal death, Body shaming, Bullying, Child abuse, Sexism, and Grief
The age gap in the relationships by today's standards is surprising but in those days was not uncommon. Likewise what by today's standards is child abuse, in those days was discipline of one's children. So, be aware that it's there and is treated as normal in the book.
