I was surprised at how readable this book was, given how long ago it was written. Ethel Turner has a way with description and the whole book is written in a personal, relatable way. The effect is that, despite the few obscure references to items and authors long out of use/fashion, the reader is transported into the life of the Woolcot family in the developing outskirts of Sydney a hundred years ago. I quite enjoyed this book.
