I loved these two. Bret and Hattie were practical and adorable. The way Bret was immediately making sure Hattie was treated with respect, despite her background, had you rooting for them from the outset. Hattie was wonderfully strong, yet maintained her sweetness in spite of all the nastiness around her. Their adventures together were an absolute blast to read.

My main gripes with the story were:
- you knew as soon as a character was described in any way as fat, that they were gonna be cruel. Real icky.
- the final conflict was so late coming, and I didn't enjoy how severe it was
- the sentence structure was sometimes a little clunky to read

I really enjoyed this one! I love books that have dangerous lovers with a secret cinnamon roll interior. This book delivered! Hassie is such a strong character despite everything she went through. She is the epitome of quiet strength. Initially, Bret appears to be your typical gruff cowboy. However, I grew to like him the more I read about him.  It was so heartwarming to see Bret make the effort to communicate with Hassie. O'Connell does a great job of developing her characters and delving into their motives. There's some action here and there, but I was expecting the plot to move a little faster. The setting feels authentic. There was a lot of talk about setting up camp, taking care of horses, and the civil war. The romance was more of a slow burn which is right up my alley.
