As Tyson is being introduced (and through the rest of the book), we see Percy going through a sort of internal battle with himself.
He doesn't want Tyson as a brother, but loves him as a friend, and sees the way Tyson is picked on and bullied even by other campers.
Tyson's presence also gives readers a bit more of a glimpse into Annabeth's past, specifically her childhood with Luke and Thalia.
That's not to say the plot of this book wasn't fantastic, but the characters really took the cake in the second installment of the Percy Jackson series.
