I really enjoyed this book, was so excited to read it I sped read my previous book just to get to it and God is it good. Such an idyllic early life with a tragic eye opening end, learned more about the revolution in El Salvador through this than any history book, which go figure. Super good.
Graphic: Gore and War
Moderate: Rape

Felt more like a sequence of events that happened instead of a compelling narrative of a man’s lived life.
Moderate: Gun violence, Sexism, War, and Drug use

this book takes a while to find its voice, but once it does it really opens up. i can see a lot of readers giving up in the first third because it feels plotless and meandering, with some pretty awkward narration including confusion over who's voice you are to be reading in. overall, the story in the second half is engaging and worth persevering for, especially if you have an interest in a zoomed in perspective on the chaos of central america in the latter half of the 20th century.
Graphic: Death, Gore, and War
Moderate: Drug use and Misogyny
Minor: Pedophilia

interesting, it gets you in the end. but there are lots of parts that can be cut, it lost me a little bit along the way, but i’m glad i stuck with it.
