I thought this would just be a cute story, but whoa. It hit me in the feels when we found out the truth about the book hog. What a wonderful story about a love of reading and how libraries and literacy change lives.

I happened to stumble on this one at the book store and immediately got it for the kids. It is such a hit.

This book is award winning for two different things

CLEL's 2020 top book for "Read" theme
2020 Geisel honor book (The Geisel Award is given to the most distinguished book for beginning readers)

Admittedly, I don't love the color palate of this book. While the colors worked for "The Watermelon Seed," they don't work as much in "The Book Hog." Still, I love the story of a hog who is obsessed with books--only he can't read. But upon visiting the library....well, you can guess what happens.

For a book nerd or librarian, there are fun details to be found in the book. Like an "old time" return thing on the end papers. Or familiar book titles written in Hog's library books. It brought a smile to my face.

This book is pretty much perfect. It's fun, it honors libraries and librarians, elevates books: what more could it have? I wasn't expecting the secret, and didn't notice how the spines on the books changed. Look closely, and you can see other Pizzoli books and characters included, and many titles and authors honored near the end. I also liked all of the meanings of "hog". We have the animal, the hoarding, and the mode of transportation!

I think this is a great book to read to kids to get them in the spirit of wanting to learn how to read.

I picked this up solely because it is pink (for my Color My TBR February color) and because what book lover can resist a book called The Book Hog. This is a cute story with a great message about the power of books, libraries, and librarians!

I'm a sucker for a book about books, what a bonus that this one features the wonderfully sweet illustrations of author/illustrator Greg Pizzoli.
