Grab the tissues. It’s almost the 1 year anniversary of when we had to say goodbye to one of our dogs and almost of Mary’s poems brought me to tears. Eventually I stopped drying my checks and just let them flow. My tears were a mix of happy and sad. It was very therapeutic.
These beautiful poems truly capture the essence of being a dog, as well as the joys and pains of loving a canine companion (or two, or three). A wonderful collection of poems and essays for any dog lover.
Maybe you’ll cry remembering the past you had with your beloved companion. Or maybe you’ll smile at the memories and think about all the good times you had with your four legged family member.
I did both.
My favourites were:
- Every Dog’s Story
- Luke
- Her Grave
- Bazougey
- The First Time Percy Came Back
- The Wicked Smile
My favourite excerpt comes from the poem “Percy Speaks While I am Doing Taxes”.

“Keep me in your thoughts,” he replies. “Just because I can’t count to ten doesn’t mean I don’t remember yesterday, or anticipate today. I’ll give you ten more minutes,” and he does.
