This felt like a tragicomedy because of the hypercapitalism just bleeding into everything but the delivery was so FUNNY sometimes. She banished an incel to the bathtub because he was just so stinky in every sense. Lots to pick apart with this and it was very worth the read

This book is easily read in one sitting. I wouldn't say I enjoyed the story, but it prompted a lot of thoughts on acceptability, normality, and finding your way when you don't fit. There is never a diagnosis, but the main character Keiko is autism coded. The book is descriptive of masking and how she tries to mimic others to appear normal. It felt exhausting reading it, not to mention doing it everyday.  Convienance Store Woman left me feeling pity, struggle, earnestness, and cheery for her in the end.

Deeply relatable. I hate all of the characters.

The 1 star is not a fault of the book, I just can’t take stories like this.

Autistic, Japanese woman is used and condescended to by everyone around her. Then a massively boorish, misogynistic  man starts living off her, lying to people, telling her what to do, and everyone around her celebrates that she’s probably getting sex. It’s PAINFUL to watch someone be so badly understood, rejected, and then congratulated for being in an unsafe r/ship just because it matched social pretense. It’s painful that she had to give/mask/perform so much just to get people to stop nagging and prying and commenting on her. And through it all, the one place she was safe is mocked and finally taken away from her. If people can read something like this and go out into their real lives not questioning how they operate on the day to day, not challenging the relationship escalator, or STILL not listening, then I hate this world. I’m so fucking mad right now, trying to tell myself it’s fiction, knowing it’s not.

Edit: hung out with some parrots. I’m okay now.

Extra context to my read: in an oddly pretentious coffeeshop in Queenstown?? Many, many annoying sg men coming in and out, all “cool” affectations with no substance. Owner was very nice.
