As often happens with Penny's books, I thoroughly enjoyed various twists of the plot. Something that seems an off hand detail turns into the theme of the book. The characters are complex. No one is guiltless. The setting is picturesque, as Three Pines always is. The final lines are a perfect tie to the beginning of this story, to previous stories with these characters, and to future stories for Three Pines.
Graphic: Alcoholism and Alcohol
Moderate: Murder
Minor: Addiction, Bullying, Child death, Cursing, Drug use, Emotional abuse, Mental illness, Self harm, Suicidal thoughts, Violence, Excrement, Grief, and Toxic friendship

Another stellar Inspector Armand Gamache novel. I loved learning so much about the art scene in Montreal.
I think I must go back and read the first novel. I liked it but didn't fully understand what the author was trying to do. It'll be a joy to see it from my new perspective.
