As often happens with Penny's books, I thoroughly enjoyed various twists of the plot. Something that seems an off hand detail turns into the theme of the book. The characters are complex. No one is guiltless. The setting is picturesque, as Three Pines always is. The final lines are a perfect tie to the beginning of this story, to previous stories with these characters, and to future stories for Three Pines.

At this point, the series is getting better and better, and this is my favorite in the series so far. I really enjoyed the pacing in this book (something I’ve struggled with in some of the earlier books in this series). The murder happens before page 75, and the clues unfold at a good pace. And Penny still had plenty of time to examine the inner lives of the suspects, victim, and investigators.

Another stellar Inspector Armand Gamache novel. I loved learning so much about the art scene in Montreal.
I think I must go back and read the first novel. I liked it but didn't fully understand what the author was trying to do. It'll be a joy to see it from my new perspective.
