This was a good book. I think the prospective from the main character lent itself to almost being a narrator, which I enjoyed. I hoped and prayed with Susie in this book. The author kept Susie's Heaven and Earth real to us as if she, herself, had visited both places. The relationships on Earth were enjoyable and heartbreaking, the long suffering of Susie's father, the hardening of Lindsey and the unexpected Ruth and gave it wonderful texture. There was one area of the book, which I will not go into as it is a spoiler, which I found a bit too far fetched to really appreciate as the whole book seemed very plausible save this one 'scene'. Overall, this book is a fast, heartwarming and sad read. It leaves you a bit the same way Susie's murder left her family. . . searching for things we may never find.

I've given this book some more serious thought and read some of the other comments floating around our little world of "goodreads". I have adjusted my rating because while I did enjoy the ride of this book, the more I think about "the spoiler" the more it "spoils" the book's charm for me. I suggest everyone scan through the reviews openly - and realise that while this book is good, there are some things that are written that cannot be undone - and you only wish they could.

This book is a beautifully written exploration of grief and parent-child relationship, with a bit of thriller thrown in to keep you on the edge of your seat. I would give it 5 stars, but the ending felt unnecessarily experimental, in a way that, to me, made it seem like the author was trying to avoid the predictable ending but wasn't entirely sure how else to wrap the story up.

You think you’ll love the book, but then you keep reading and ask yourself why is this or that on the book, the it gets sooo bad.

This was a great book. I was a little apprehensive to start it because my mom recently passed away, so I wasn't sure reading a book about death would be good for me. But I ended up really enjoying it. It was very well written and always interesting.

Reading this for the second time, I’m obsessed with the dark, emotional storyline. Easy to digest, but slows down in the middle. The ending is worth it.

Her name is Susie. Last name Salmon, like the fish. She is fourteen. And she is telling us a story. The only thing is, she's dead. Yep, she's dead. She's telling her story from the Heaven.

From some of the reviews I've read, some people shed tears reading this book. Maybe I'm not too sensitive because I could not find a reason to cry, even after I finished reading. Just that I found the story to be kinda disturbing. And different.

I felt a bit impatient towards the end of the book. And there's a bit of "Ghost" (as in the movie) going on. It's disturbing, really. If reading a story from the point of view of a dead person is not disturbing enough, I don't know what is.

That being said, I think The Lovely Bones is a lovely read. If you want something different.
