Dry. I didn’t know that road ecology existed.

an absolutely stunning introduction into road ecology & the far-reaching effects of infrastructure on microbe, plant, animal, & human communities.
a must read for anyone interested in such seemingly broad but inextricably linked topics as environmentalism, ecology & evolution, urban planning, & social justice

So informative, and really lovely prose. There are so many angles to road ecology that I had no idea existed, and this book does an excellent survey of so many of them “…the vulnerability of a soft and living body in a world made for machines.”

Well-researched and rooted in solid science. My only complaint is that the author takes a few liberties to become political and may turn off potential conservationists across the aisle.

Name your environmental ill—dams, poaching, megafires—and consider that roads kill more creatures with less fanfare than any of them.
Human-caused disaster disguised as natural predation.
An ecosystem that can support bears is probably healthy enough for everyone else.
