I'm re-reading through my collection for the nostalgia. I have to wonder how these "mysteries" captivated me as a kid- as an adult I'm just not a believer most of the time. Aunt Jane just magically changing personality because these girls are just that good, her giving over a ranch to 4 children, her ability to keep everyone else from doing anything- it just didn't fit. Don't get me wrong- for what it is (a sophisticated, engaging graded reader) this book does quite well. But it's mystery is probably the weakest of the original 4.

This took me all of 30 minutes to finish start-to-finish. It's not a horrible story, but it could have easily been expanded on. There are people and events happening in the background that are vital to the direction of what happens overall - events that would be fascinating if they were broken down in detail. Who are these mysterious individuals that have potentially malicious intent? Seriously? I mean, you're talking about uranium and people that secretly want it...but you're not going to tell me WHY or WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE? ARE YOU SERIOUS? The book is just like....yeah...crazy huh. Don't worry about that, though. We took care of it.

*dumbfounded look*

Made for a peaceful roundtrip to Sam's Club. Violet is the thrifty, aesthetically inclined homemaker I long to be.

The big "mystery" was that they saw a guy at the train station and didn't know who he was. But still a solid way to kill 45 minutes.

Feel-good book without a lot of substance, I felt. Had a good heart, helping others, so that's a good thing, but the cloying sweetness is getting a bit thick. The children liked it.
