This book is basically a collection of briefly presented ideas for making memories & rituals out of both every-day and special occasions. I especially appreciated the ideas for memorializing a child's first day of school, giving a child both a new privilege and a new responsibility every birthday, and the section for traditions specific to adopted children. I also really like how easy to find event-related ideas are in this book. This one's been permanently added to our family bookshelf.

I liked the overall concept and some of the ideas, but there were also a lot of examples referencing specific religious beliefs, gender stereotypes, and even some kind of racist references. I would’ve  preferred more about the frameworks of rituals and some conversations around things like appropriation vs appreciation.

This is a great collection of different family traditions for all types of occasions, including the daily ones like meals and bedtime. It really got me thinking! I can't wait for Finn to be old enough to get into holidays :$

“Family rituals are practically any activity you purposely repeat together as a family that includes a hightented attentiveness, and something extra that lifts it above the ordinary ruts.”

This was a great resource and I took notes of different ideas I liked. Some sections I glanced through when they were not relevant to my family (ex. adoption and step-family). I love the idea of everyday rituals as those are the events that happen on a daily basis and are the ones that makes each family unique. When asked what kids remember most about their childhood, it wasnt big gifts or fancy celebrations, but simple rituals and everyday traditions. These are modest but personal gestures of love that allow children to feel safe and treasured.

I liked all the ideas and the general guidelines of what makes up a ritual. It helped me notice more of the little things I already do with my kids and how that impacts them.

My overall impression of this book:

aint nobody got time for that

Had some good ideas, but I think family rituals and traditions are better if they evolve organically.
