The first two scenarios of the lovers meeting I was intrigued, but the more the story went on, the more annoyed I was. Nothing was new, it was just the two of them being awful to eachother and then to themselves.
the only I think could’ve saved the book was a good ending but her dying of cancer felt like such a cop out and made everything else redundant.
the side characters and glimpses to Peru’s political state were far more intriguing to the central characters and storyline.

The book is narated in a very "mid century" style, even hough it was published in 2006. If you enjoy Remarqe and find Nabokov a bit too much this would be a good choice.
I must say never have I hated the characters so much while being so mesmerised by their life story.
The first part of the book is a bit of a drag in my opinion, but in the second half the story just starts to flow so naturally and conveys really well the reality of what life has become for Ricardo after he accepted the bad girl the way she was and when things just didn't surprise him anymore.
The book was a 3 when I started but by the end of it it was almost a solid 4.
