Again, A Day of Fallen Night is split into two parts in the German translation and it’s unfortunate once more. Not only does this interrupt the flow of the story but they also demand 44(!)€ to read the whole book, big yikes. But still, I loved this novel so much and I hope I won’t forget too much before I read the second half.

It’s a bit hard so summarize the story because there are so many characters and places we visit in the course of it. We mainly follow three characters, namely Glorian, the daughter of the current Queen Sabran, Tunuva, a sister at the Priory of the Orange Tree, and Dumai, the secret daughter of a king. There’s also Wulf who’s a knight in Sabran’s queendom. All these three stories were really interesting, and I can’t wait to see how they will all intertwine in the second half of the novel. I especially liked Glorian’s and Tunuva’s part of the story.

In general, I liked the plot here more than in The Priory of the Orange Tree. I can’t really say why; maybe this time, I finally got Shannon’s writing. The things that happened where just better understandable than in the first book. The first half of this novel was mostly an introduction to the very detailed and big world and the different well-described settings and characters, but I didn’t mind this since I’m just so invested in the world. After the volcano erupts, it was so chilling to see how the danger is in front of them, but no one excepts the prior really wants to act on it – this was very similar to the way in which governments today respond to climate change, in my opinion.

I was just waiting for everything to escalate and oh boy, how it does. Towards the end of this first part of the novel,
Glorian’s parents get killed by a dragon, Sighul dies, and Siya is gone after learning the truth. In general, the dragons starting to get active was just so creepy
. There’s so much drama and I can’t wait to see how the story will continue. Additionally, I want to highlight some scenes that I found especially amazing and epic, like
the volcano erupting, Dumai meeting the dragon for the first time, and Glorian visiting the mausoleum with all her ancestors

Another thing I especially appreciate about this novel is how women-centred the story is and how casual queer the cast is. I also had the feeling that the story was feminist in general when looking at the topics discussed. I liked all of our main characters and really wanted to know what would happen to them. Wulf was the only man though and the least interesting for me as well lmao. What I furthermore appreciate about the MCs is that they are all at different points in their lives and they are in their core good people. I honestly feel so sorry for Glorian, she’s just too young for all the things happening around her. Esbar’s and Tunuva’s relationship was so great, didn’t know that I liked reading about established relationships until now.

All in all, I can’t wait to read the second part of A Day of Fallen Night and I’m so happy to finally have a five-star read again since many books I’ve read in the last time couldn’t convince me.
