I found this to be an extremely frustrating book to read.

Yes, part of that came from the main character’s decisions. However, it’s easy to cast judgement when removed from a situation and that is I think the main point of the book. I also knew that I would be frustrated with that going in, so I am going to stay away from that for the rest of my review.

First, the main ale character has no attractive/redeeming personality traits. He is annoying, arrogant, and manipulative. He was never a fun character to read about.

Second, there were diary entries from when the main female character was 15/16, which were obviously not written by a teenager. They had years of reflective commentary that made no sense. Also it would have been so easy to just have them be memories and it would have all made sense, so why weren’t they?

Third, the Boston elements make almost no sense. I fully acknowledge this is nit picky and I have read books set in other cities where the same thing happens, but this is where I live and these were noticeable. This woman driving everywhere? Don’t believe it for a second. Massachusetts General Hospital, never heard a single soul call it that and I know people that work there.

Fourth, these people say each others names way too often.

Finally, just random stuff that made no sense and would take me out of a scene. A doctor taking a nap with his stethoscope still on. Steampunk being referred to as new in 2016. The main female character just casually read the Bible as a teen.

I am curious enough about the characters that I haven’t totally decided against the second, but it’s still up in the air.

 Title: It Ends With Us
Series: It Ends With Us #1
 Author: Colleen Hoover
 Genre: Romance, Fiction, New Adult
 Rating: 2/5
 Review:

I wanted to love this book. I wanted to love this author, so much!!! I have a family member that I care for deeply that adores her… But as it turns out… I really REALLY don’t.

I can understand that I am not the target audience for Hoover’s books. The writing style is pretty simplistic and to be honest a bit… immature? I’m not sure if that’s the right word, but if you cut out the sex scenes, I wouldn’t be surprised to find this in the young adult section. (Which there’s nothing wrong with. I love a good YA).

Then again… The sheer amount of trigger warnings this book needs would probably get it banned immediately if it were YA. I even made a comment about halfway through the book about needing a trigger warning bingo card for it.

*spoilers*

All of that aside, the storyline was something straight out of a season of Days of our Lives only darker with more excuses (and before anyone comes at me, I’ve been where Lily was at minus the pregnancy). That paired with the unrealistic ages of the characters, and the horrific cliches makes this a hard no for me.

That being said, I get why Hoover has her fan base and why others like her which is why I have not rated this novel lower than what it is and I feel as if other of her books probably aren’t as bad as I believe this one is. She is not a terrible writer she simply is not for me.

I loved the book, it was emotional and upsetting but also keeps you craving for what happens next. The ending was very loveable and I enjoyed this as my first read.

this was a very readable book, it kept my attention and had some twists and turns. that said, i think some of the timelines and overall successes and attitudes of characters are predictable and stereotypical. ryle as a character just confused me, he was so openly against relationships and sentimental things but that all suddenly changed when he met lily. a lot of the characters go through very sudden developments and don’t get a lot of time to processes without jumping into the next thing. i don’t regret reading this at all, and i especially liked the epilogue. it tied things together and i was happy to see lily in a good spot. i just would want to make sure people read the tw before opening a super popular book like this one.
