The story takes place in ancient Chinese history and includes some historical fiction elements. I love that the main character is female and that there are a number of different female characters with three-dimensional personalities. However, there are a lot of names involved, so I needed to take notes to make sure I was remembering who everyone ones.

Having very little experience and exposure with Chinese culture, I struggled a bit with naming conventions, customs, and the like with this book.
It may have proven helpful if the translator had provided a bit of an introduction? I know I found that helpful in the translation of Anna Karenina that I read - and would revisit that intro often as I found myself lost in the reading.
