I didn’t have many expectations going on with this book, I just picked it up because I’m a sucker for period romances. That’s why I’m not disappointed, but it did feel mildly flat. I certainly had the envision that this was going to be something like Captive Prince with the political intrigue, complex morally-grey characters, court wiles and treason/betrayal. What I got:
1. Predictable storyline: I knew from the moment Iain said who his mother was; the (not really) major character death; I was mostly a bit annoyed at how nothing really seemed to surprise or shake me.
2. Too many sex scenes (which for the great part I enjoyed, however, I was discouraged to pick up the book when another of those scenes came, wey ya). That aside, I simply wanna know if my dudes washed up/took baths often cause imagine doing the deed with five days worth of body odor. Omg they reeked.
3. Objectively speaking (there’s no “objectively speaking” because this is my opinion jajan’t) when you think of Harry’s personality at the beginning and at the end, he’s actually stayed as the same person. Nothing has really changed him or gave him some character development. I believe that the only thing he did realize was Court deceiving, not all nobility can’t be trusted. That’s it. He’s not someone else outside the sphere of knighthood and his relationship with Iain. All that happens to Harry appears eclipsed by his feelings towards Iain, there’s nothing just flatness. We get that he’s the good guy. But my dude, don’t you have a little remorse for the mistakes you make? On the other hand, I could say that Iain has a better character development that Harry. In the beginning, I got to see this conflict within himself about liking Harry that could’ve dragged a bit more to make it seem more realistic. Like your people just butchered my people, let’s not pretend that I should feel fine with that and plaster Iain in a bad shadow just for wanting to escape, which I felt like from just Harry’s POV. Therefore, I believe it would’ve been more convenient to write a dual POV because what’s happened to Iain during all those years ? His journey as Black Knight, all his suffering and pain. My boy
