the first and only time i read this book was - gasp - 13 years ago, for a school project which i obsessed about for weeks because this book spoke to me heavily back then. i have no idea how is it that i interpreted it other than it being a book about the most insecure man i'd ever seen; that remains now. truly one of the simplest descents into madness i've ever found in books, so subtle you almost think he's sane. i don't find this to be a mystery book or a thriller like so many people tend to imagine; everyone reads it and immediately gets on the bandwagon of he-said-she-said of it, but to me it seems very clear that this is a book about masculine madness, insecurity, insensibility. it doesn't matter who did what, what matters is how this boy never came to be a man. he's stuck in a timeloop inside his own head, where everyone is safe and happy except for him. he's got no confidence and the only thing he knows how to do is swift and flow through the emotions other people have for him. it's so great to read, so inspiring, so real and raw. good fucking stuff right here

Slow read, didn't expect that ending, he lost everyone he ever loved, and capitu indeed did not cheat on him, somehow he became paranoid after the death of his best friend.
