Absolutely enthralling and one of the best plays I have unfortunately never had the chance to see performed. I read this in a drama development class, and we were only assigned to read Millennium Approaches - I went out and got Perestroika as soon as I was finished.

Leiam este livro, vejam a série.
É verdade que é um livro potente sobre o VIH Sida, mas é - igualmente - um incisivo retrato da política e da sociedade norte-americana nos anos 80.

If you're at all interested in theater, I would say this play a must-read.
It's considered a classic for a reason - Kushner is really good at building interesting characters and hooking people into the story, even if they're just reading and not watching the play. The way he writes about America, the AIDS epidemic, and the politics of the 80s is fascinating. Even though I didn't understand everything, it made me think about the preconceptions I had about the time as someone who didn't live through it.
The characters were definitely the most interesting part of this book for me. Kushner weaves together the stories of Prior, Louis, Joe, and everyone else in such an interesting way, while also connecting them to the real history of people like Roy Cohn and Ethel Rosenberg. I found myself feeling bad for these characters and hating them at the same time, and I think this book made me realize that I like stories about messy people. They felt like real people in difficult situations - and real people aren't perfect!
Subtracting a few points from my rating because the dialogue was difficult to understand / follow at some points, but I also think it would be easier to keep track of if I was watching the play. But overall, I find myself still thinking about these characters and I'm tempted to watch the National Theatre production.

I really loved the movie but liked the reading the play less...probably because it's harder to follow as text
