Started out interesting and went in directions I did not expect. The ending was proper gruesome and horrifying. The main character could be described as flawed and horrifying herself, but I really enjoyed a female protagonist that was more like a villain than a hero. Some of her choices didn’t quite make sense, the impulsiveness not entirely earned, but I will still eagerly read the sequel to this. I enjoyed the complicated friendship between the two leads, the burgeoning LGBT romance, and I hope Ale falls in love and gets a happy ending.

Way darker and more distressing than I expected from a YA novel. Interesting commitment to a flawed main character in a way that makes me want to read the sequel and hopefully see the MC grow—and the origin of the world be explained more.

Mara Fitzgerald has a way with words that leaves me speechless. Her style is short, to the point, very matter-of-fact.

I’m usually one for flowy, pretentious prose that requires the reader to have a thesaurus on standby (we all have flaws), but this book is so easy to read because of its simplicity with words.

The depth and insight into Emanuela’s character is in the very careful word choice, the perfectly crafted sentences that give you a look inside the inner workings of her thought process. They make you realize things about Emanuela that she herself has yet to fully sit with and unpack.

Sigh. If only the girl would stop and feel emotions other than anger, jealousy, and greed whenever they passed her mind. Maybe in the next one.

I can’t wait for the next one.
