Princess Academy ended with a royal betrothal and life becoming better for the families on Mount Eskel. Palace of Stone opens a few months later, when the graduates of the academy are invited to Asland to attend the royal wedding. Except, things are not what they are reported to be in Asland, unrest rules the town, with the noble and royal classes on the brink of being overthrown in a violent revolution by the shoeless. Miri realizes this the day everyone arrives, when one of the shoeless attempts to assassinate the King during the Fall Tribute. As Miri goes to the Queen's College and learns more about the history and social classes of Danland, she also learns more about the revolution and learns that everything she holds dear could be taken away from her, depending on what happens during the revolution.
