i am in love with this book. from the beginning, you see the threads of longing, of what might have been—but only in part 2 does the book really show what it's made of. this is a powerful examination of intergenerational trauma and the lasting effects of abuse. it is about coming home, physically, emotionally, familially. and it is a slowburn friends-to-enemies-to-friends story, a story of learning how to grapple with the harm we do and the harm we experience. my favorite so far of the women's prize longlist this year.

It was alright. There were things that I felt could have been better implemented and had greater meotional impact. Those things asides, it was a pretty middle of the road, worthwhile read.

Loved this!! Although I could not for the life of me tell you why the title is Nightbloom because I feel like it has nothing to do with the book as far as I can tell lol but I’ll do some research and find out why it’s called that!!

I think I prefer the memory of this book more than I did actually reading it.

I struggled through the first half of this book with Akorfa, I found her difficult to empathise with at times but not unlikable enough for me to enjoy her unlikability. After the halfway mark I started really enjoying seeing the same events from Selasi’s perspective. This dual viewpoint is what ultimately makes the story successful—it reveals both the seen and unseen aspects of their shared experiences. While the final act of friendship reconnection didn't feel rushed, I believe it deserved more attention. For a book whose major theme is lifelong friendships, some more time focussing on this reconciliation at the end wouldn’t have gone amiss.
