A weird gay epic poem. Feels deeply personal. I expect to read it again probably many times.

I’m not usually a big fan of the “coming of age” genre but this book truly stood out. It was incredibly tender and beautifully written. Anne Carson’s creativity and her unique approach to experimenting with classical myth made this so phenomenal.

“It seemed/ that darkness had descended but then the car rounded a curve and the sky/ rushed open before them-/ bowl of gold where the last movements of sunset were exploding- then another curve/ and blackness snuffed out all” (133).

I don't even know how to describe this book. I will say that it was good, and that I can tell there are still a lot of secrets in here that will take several rereads to understand. When I closed the book, I found myself feeling like I should thank Anne Carson for this reading experience. I have had a copy of this book for a couple of years now, and I have picked it up and put it down several times over the course of these years, always ending up frustrated that I felt like some lines didn't make sense to me. I found myself saying that poetry just wasn't for me.

It's strange how you can start a book at one point in your life and it not be quite right, and then one day you put in the effort and it all clicks. This book was not something I could breeze through. I had to reread several poems and sit with them for a bit, turning them over and over in my head. My TikTok-addled brain hasn't been still with a book like this for a long time, and I can thank Anne Carson for reminding me just how rewarding a challenging book can be if you are willing to sit with your discomfort a bit.

How do you think it feels growing up in a house full of empty fruit bowls?
