I definitely like this better than book one of the series. Primarily because of the way Anna’s character has evolved since we were first introduced to her. It was also enjoyable to see her and Charles be playful and loving towards each other. Charles’s character is allowed to smile, express himself and have emotions with Anna.  And I enjoy seeing the creatures of the supernatural world in a different situations than we see with Mercy because it’s starkly different from Mercy’s account of them and things are more of a surprise when it comes to the Alpha and Omega books.(Even if I did call the villains in this book halfway through😌)

Uneven writing. Re Charles & Anna's relationship, what seemed charming or romantic in the first book seems hokey and/or melodramatic in this one. But Briggs elaborates on werewolf society in very creative ways - more about how an Omega works, which I found very interesting.

Not as good as Cry Wolf. The first half of the book is slow and boring but thankfully livens up in the second half.

Anna is still too submissive for my tastes. Despite the progress she and Charles make in Cry Wolf, they are still pussy footing around each other. She remains insecure about her role in his life and often balks at any sudden move Charles or his wolf make. As in the previous books, Anna does show a backbone at certain moments but the constant one step forward, two steps back is tedious and irritating.

Charles has incredible potential as an Alpha. Unfortunately, this is constantly undermined by behavior that is inconsistent with his characterization. For someone who is supposedly intelligent and incredibly powerful, he is too easily subdued by magic and ultimately needs to be rescued by his wife. This is an obvious ploy to strengthen Anna's character but only serves to weaken Charles.

The plot is interesting enough to keep the reader engaged, especially the detail on the dynamics between the European wolves and the clever inclusion of elements from Arthurian lore. That said, the villains are far too obvious and the resolution reeks of Deus ex Machina.

The writing is also problematic with unnecessary repetition, awkward sentence structure, incorrect use of pronouns and some confusing transitions between POVs - all of which draw the reader out of the story.

In sum, the premise of this series is good but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Overall I preferred the plot for this book over that of book one, Cry Wolf. It had more interesting ancillary characters, more subplots weaved throughout and a really good whodunnit mystery for the main storyline.

I also enjoyed seeing the slow but sure progress Anna is making from the girl who was too frightened to be around anyone but Charles- and even that only when he was calm- to someone that's....actually kind of a badass!

Charles continues to be the epitome of the supportive mate. His characterization is quite subtle, but effective. At least where I am concerned. I think I may possibly be a teensy bit in love with him. Whoopsies!

We're not talking Adam Hauptman levels of awesomeness quite yet, but to be fair, this is only book two in this spin-off series, so he has time to catch up;)

I can't wait to read Fair Game which comes out in just two days. I'm all refreshed, ready and raring to go. Bring it on!
