Honesty, no notes. This was super fun and thoughtfully written. A friends-to-lovers romance with an awesome trans FMC and a lovable MMC. Hall's characterization is excellent and the story and side characters have some depth. It's a sweet romance with a side of gender identity exploration, queerness, and excellent disability and mental health representation.

The intimacy was well written and realistic and it feels realistic enough to the time without being depressing - perfect escapism!

Such a good romance! A lesser author would've made it half as long, with the only conflict being stealth and in love, but the plot moves outside of the main couple as well. I love all of the main characters, and they're all so very interesting.
Favorite quote: "Lady Marleigh nodded. 'Exactly. Breakfast is the best meal of the day--as it should be, to console one for having to get out of bed.'" I love her.

This was fun and sweet and heartfelt and successful at being a book with a trans heroine where the main conflict is not about her being trans. But it is very much a book about gender, in which Viola learns to embody her womanhood while rejecting the gendered expectations that don't suit her, and Gracewood learns to redefine what it means to be a man in a way that integrates his past traumas without being confined or dictated by them.

I wish we'd gotten a better picture of their friendship pre-Waterloo and how that affects their present relationship. Especially after the first 150 or so pages, it often felt that little would change about the story if they were complete strangers before meeting at Morgancald post-war.

A few pacing issues, a few places I’d swear a paragraph was accidentally cut, but otherwise - if you want a tropey historical romance with a trans lead who is treated with exquisite gentleness by the author and the other characters, and a sweeping happily ever after, you’ve come to the right place. I stayed up too late finishing this <3

While overall I did enjoy the book I thought the pacing was a bit all over the place, and the last 50 or so pages felt out of place with the story and was honestly slightly crazy. I thought one of the characters ptsd was well written and not sensationalised. And I did enjoy how Viola’s transness was written and wasn’t made to be the main point of conflict in the connection with the love interest but the conflict was kind of annoying because realistically they had nothing stopping them being together. I feel like Mira needs her own book or story with her aged up slightly to explore her sexuality because her storyline felt a little shallow and then also forced at the end.
