I was looking for a light/easy “beach read” that was distracting but not excessively thought-provoking and I got it! With a twist. I went in without expectation, as I hadn’t read the summary ahead of time. Someone on Insta shared it as a rec for someone waiting on medical results, and needing a distraction, like me. There was a MAJOR plot twist/genre twist part way through and while I agree with a lot of the criticism around the two halves, and characters’ behaviors in the first half vs second half, I went in with a desire for a distracting, fun, “easy” beach read, and that’s what I got! Very engaging.

Don’t judge this book by its cover. I thought I was in for some fluffy chick lit, and halfway through it was jazzed up with a murder mystery. Honestly, the first half was definitely slower, the characters shallow, but that was all so that things could unfold in the second half. I really loved it and by the end I loved the characters too. I did not see the twist coming at all.

This was fantastic! It explores the subjects of body image, female friendships, the cost of money, and revenge in a way that’s both fluffy and deep. This was 100% outside of my comfort zone, but it was so worth it.

Just…wow. It was slow(ish) at the start but I found myself loving Daphne from the very beginning. None of Jennifer Weiner’s writing felt forced or showy or unnatural. Loved this one, was shocked by the ending. And Daphne’s advice for being brave…just felt, real.

Absolutely will be recommending for book club!

This book wasn't what I thought it was going to be, taking a wild 180 about halfway through. Usually this kind of twist/genre change happening out of nowhere would really turn me off a book, but the writing and characterization, as well as how represented I felt through Daphne still made this an enjoyable book.

That being said, I think this would have been a 5-star read for me if the plot had followed what the summaries and blurbs led me to believe I was reading. And I think it would have allowed for more exploration of the books themes.

Found it to be slightly cheesy and pretty predictable. It's about a girl who struggles with her weight her whole life, and then when it comes to the end, she uses her 'heftiness' to her advantage to get out of a physical altercation. I didn't personally find it to be realistic.

Characters are insufferable and childish + it feels like I’ve read nothing but descriptions of what people are wearing, eating, and where they are. Incredibly boring.
