Oh man I should’ve know @pdjeliclark was going to absolutely deliver SOLID GOLD in story form! I loved every minute of this from the glorious Agent Fatma to the effervescent Siti, the djinn, the mystery, the setting, and history…. Just everything. I had the best time reading this story, and if you’re an audiobook fan the narrator is FABULOUS! Reminds me heavily of Sherlock but make it sapphic and Egyptian. If you are in need of a book to whisk you off to a wondrous mystical place this is the book for you.

This. Was. FANTASTIC!! One of the best books I've read all year. I love the setting, the characters, the history, the folklore... Wow!! I want more books like this! A historian writing steampunk that centres entirely different cultures and histories than usual... I love it! Reading this felt like eating a delicious and varied meal you'd never tasted!

Fatima and Hadia made a great detective team, and I loved Siti. There were so many amazing side characters too, from a musician refugee from Jim Crow calling himself Mansa Musa, to a haughty djinn librarian, to a master of thieves feeding hungry children while keeping some wealth for herself. The world building was so rich, with so many strands woven together to make an engrossing tapestry. I'd love to see more of this world!

P Djèlí Clark is just a gem of a writer.  Everything he’s published is stellar.  I just finished reading “A Master of Djinn.”  It’s a noir, steampunk, fantastical story of a queer supernatural investigator in Cairo in 1912 who just wants to wear dapper suits, dance with her girlfriend, and stop the end of the world.
