I want to preface this review with the fact that I appreciate the representation of black love, natural hair love and the fact that Ryan, Angela and her family broke the stereotypical mold of black characters. Alexandria House is a fantastic author and her prose are great, but this book didn’t work. I understand giving side characters conflict, but not EVERY single one needs a traumatic backstory. Also, as a black woman, I understand the idea of taking back the n-word, but I just hate it, even the n***a variation. Every time someone used it, I was taken out of the story. And then there was the fact that Angela and Ryan’s relationship was not fleshed out and every moment was boom-boom-boom; almost like she was attempting to hit the necessary plot points. Ryan as our Hero was not a good hero. I didn't root for him or his journey. He was inconsiderate and gross from the beginning. and after one or two scenes with Angela, he was a changed man.
