I had two reasons for reading this: being curious about what kind of writer David Gilmour's wife is when she's not penning lyrics for horrible songs - and wanting to read fan fiction about Leonard Cohen and some young authors in the 60s on a Greek island. The writing is fine, but I found it rather detached and could not connect to the main characer - or the side characters floating by. Seminal plot points were done away with really quickly while unimportant things went on for pages. What I did like were the descriptions of the island. I've never really been interested in travelling to Greek islands, but now I suddenly am. But definitely not in the summer!

Couldn’t get on with this at all.  It meanders and seemed plotless to me

Thank you Netgalley, Algonquin Books and Polly Samson for free e-ARC in return of my honest review of A Theater for Dreamers.

It is hard to review a book that I did not get at all. I was lost int the story and characters. None of them came alive for me and I was just turning pages just to get through without of much understanding and sense of what was going on. Sometimes it felt that Polly Samson had wanted to explore grief of young Erica and how she throws herself into the community of people she barely knows to deal with feeling that she has no idea how to and no one there to help her guide through the. I tried to feel compassion toward her, and only felt irritation with the simple communication and her noisiness.

I wish I enjoyed it more, and I am glad I am finished with it.

2.5. I found it to be a bit of a trek. As a Montrealer I was drawn to the history of Leonard Cohen but the endlessly piling description felt frivolous to me at times. Practically plotless but if you’re looking for descriptions of Greek island life...... that’s pretty much all it is
