Eh, this book was okay. I liked the main character Rosalind and the FBI agent Charlie. There were some interesting backstory relationships/components, but the main plot was really flat and plateaued without a satisfying climax. A lot of the "revelations" were obvious and didn't feel like much of a reveal. Not a lot really actually happened. Not bad enough to quit reading, fine enough for an airplane read, but not memorable.

Atomic Love promised all the things I love in a book: a bit of romance, Russian spies, the fate of the world, and a strong female lead. However, it fell short in every aspect. The romance between Rosalind and Weaver was hard to believe and I didn't feel like there was ever a choice between him and Charlie. The espionage is few and far between, mainly dry conversations and unseen Russians. The fate of the world technically lies in Rosalind's hands as she investigates if Weaver is giving nuclear secrets to the Russians. In spite of this, I had a difficult time feeling like it really mattered. No one seems too urgent about the Russians, the bombs, or Weaver so I couldn't make myself care very much if Rosalind succeeded. Finally, Rosalind is not the strong heroine I expected. I wanted so badly for her to become a badass spy and face danger head on and move on from Weaver. I thought "oh good another book about a woman in stem, I can get behind this". Instead, Roz clings to her ex boyfriend desperately and spends the majority of the book reflecting on her depression and frozen life. She is sad about playing a role in the atomic bomb but she doesn't let that drive her to anything better; she wallows and lacks any amount of ambition. In conclusion, I found the heroine whiny, the love story uninspiring, and the plot boring. The only positive I have for this novel is that it does tie in some historical elements nicely and makes the time period come to life (the reason for two stars instead of one). If you don't like slow period pieces with no drama or excitement, pass on this one.
