Dark. Couple of twists, both surprising and not so surprising..
Strangely slow, but not at the same time...
The characters at times felt kind of juvenile (even in the 'present day' parts)

Content warning (spoiler ish):
non consensual acts with relatively detailed description between minors (teen)/adult - bothered me more than expected.

This book kept me interested and was a pretty quick finish. I don't think it lived up to the BookTok hype - but what book does? I enjoyed how much of Geo's story was told in a relatively quick way - from teenage years, to
her incarceration
, to present day. About 3/4 of the way through, I had an epiphany that
Kai was the killer and had been trying to get Geo's attention due to his years-long unrequited love
. I was a bit disappointed that I was wrong. It would have been a stretch, but
no more of a stretch than a surprise son doing copycat crimes of his serial killer father to get his mother's attention and then showing up to rape her
.

Boy, was this dark! I’m not complaining, but I genuinely wasn’t expecting that for some reason.

This book has been languishing on my TBR for years, so I’m glad I finally picked it up. I ended up enjoying it for the most part. It was super messed up and went in a lot of unexpected directions. I just felt like parts of this dragged and went on for way too long. Like, a big chunk was spent outlining her life in prison…and for what? Cut out like 100 pages and I think I would have loved this.

CWs for sexual assault, graphic depictions of jail life, rape, gore/violence, emetophobia, child death, murder, violence involving eyeballs

Story: 3/5
