'Garlic and the Vampire' by Bree Paulsen is a sweet middle grade graphic novel that delves into anxiety and facing your fears.
Garlic lives with her vegetable friends and tends a garden for witch Agnes. When they notice that someone is living in the old castle on the hill and discover that it is a vampire, Garlic is put forward to go and investigate. After all, vampires hate garlic, right?
Paulsen creates an extremely cute graphic novel that also introduces kids to anxiety and standing up for oneself. The art style is soft and welcoming. Garlic is a very relatable character, especially with her anxiety. The story is quick, mostly comprised of art, but conveys a deep sense of story. I'm excited that there is a sequel because I can't wait to return to this world. This is the perfect comic book for autumn. I cannot recommend this book enough.
