This has been a blast! I desperately wanted to read a story where the characters play D&D together for the past three years now, and now I finally got one :)
I love stories that are centered around a friendship and this one in particular made me wish I started playing TTRPGs earlier in my life. It is such a fun way to connect with others and tell a story together and it's so clear to see in this graphic novel how much this game can mean to the players.

A middle grade graphic novel about learning to make new friends and Dungeons and Dragons, from my favorite Molly Knox Ostertag. I especially appreciated the way the D&D games were included in this; they were illustrated like their own storytlines, which just added to the overall story. Plus, we get little character cards for each new character introduced, whether or not they play D&D. It's just such a fun concept, from start to finish.

There are a lot of middle grade readers who will absolutely love this, there's so much they will be able to relate to. Can't wait to recommend it to avid graphic novel readers at work.

This book book is perfect for any starting dnd player or anyone who loves dnd! Ostertag perfectly executed a story of friendship, courage, and the ups and downs of middle school. I loved how everyone had a stats block when introduced on the page, it really made it feel like a dnd campaign. Bouma's illustrations are to die for and make the story come off the page. I can't wait to see where this series goes!

This book! This book is already so near and dear to my heart. I was once that child who was told that I should give up 'playing pretend' so I could focus on more important things. Roll Call perfectly captures that conundrum all of us face at any age: when you rely on a fantasy world for escapism, do you choose to open up to let new people in or do you keep it to yourself so no one can harm it? I can always count on Molly Knox Ostertag for an incredible story and Xanthe Bouma's remarkable illustrations truly make Roll Call as incredible to read as it is.
