Just what I was looking for in what was feeling like a reading slump. Solid mystery with interesting setting and characters. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

Chalk one up for marketing and design. Apparently Harper has been doing these Olive Editions for several years now but I'm only noticing them now for the first time. And they look so nice I just had to buy all of the current batch. I've been wanting to read more mysteries anyway. This one is a Navajo murder mystery in which the culprit appears to be a figure from folklore. There is more adventure and less detective work than I expected, but it worked for me. I may read another of this author some time.

Very slow and atmospheric compared to many mystery novels I've read, but so exciting! An excellent candidate for a new series to scratch the mystery itch once I run out of Miss Marple!

Well, shoot.  This is a series that I could definitely get into and now I'm into it!!!  Augh!  You can definitely tell this book was written a while ago, but the mystery still stands up to time.  I wasn't thrilled with the way the main character tried to keep things away from Ellen (Helen?  I couldn't tell exactly with the reader) because she was a woman.  Not sure if that was a bias in the author or a bias the author wrote into the character.  But I feel like this is going to be a fun one - maybe I will read it instead of listen to it next time.  The reader had a very soothing voice and sometimes it was hard to stay focused.  But overall I really liked the characters and the story and learning more about how things work with the native police on the reservation - looking forward to reading more.

The wonderfully detailed atmosphere and research that went into fleshing out the supernatural aspect of the plot make the book. On the other hand, as a mystery, it’s not particularly compelling. The characters are likable enough but not particularly complex. I suspect that this aspect may improve as the series continues and the author has more of a chance to develop detective Leaphorn.

"The Blessing Way" seemed interesting, but after a few chapters, I realized it wasn't quite the right fit for me right now. There was a lot of unfamiliar vocabulary related to Navajo culture, which slowed me down as I tried to understand the context. The focus on rituals and beliefs was fascinating, but I was hoping for a faster pace with a quicker jump into the core mystery. Additionally, with the dual narrative and the use of some Navajo phrases, I felt like I needed to put in more effort to follow along than I was in the mood for at this point.
