A surprisingly sweet ending for a book which starts with the main characters in a rather mercenary relationship of convenience.

Great read. Only I thought it needed more to be fully developed, especially the relationship between the two main characters.

Summary: When her brother is sentenced to death, highwayman FMC agrees to sex (and marriage) with the mysterious executioner to spare his life.

Stats: HR - M/F, noncon/coerced.  Open door. Stand alone.

Notes: Fairly short and straightforward, mostly noncon/coerced sex.  The emotional plot has less depth than the other aspects of the story, but was still satisfying.  I think it could have used some more development of the FMC and a less rushed ending, but enjoyable nonetheless.

OTT and Spoilery Content Warnings (CW) and Trigger Warnings (TW):
Spoilerexecution (hanging), golden child, knife violence, fistfight, restraint (nonkink) with hands/body weight, blackmail/coercion, theft, criminal FMC, executioner MMC, religion - christian wedding service (brief),  blood play? (MMC tastes FMC's menstrual blood), noncon/dubcon, fire, burn scars, blindness, parents with alcoholism, disabled parent (back injury), off page unintentional injury (and presumed death) of animal, touch starved MMC, a little power play (dominant MMC), pregnancy, SA

Fast paced little short story. It was interesting to get a glimpse of a side of history that you don’t think about often. Emmat was a strong and smart heroine. She had every reason to dig her heels in and hate Vane, but she instead recognized all the similarities between them and chose to build something from that. The chaplain is the real MVP though!
