While the first story is fun and an interesting look into the world of the Wesen, for the most part this is a misstep.

This is volume 1 of a graphic novel series based on the TV series of the same name. As both are written by the same people, I would assume that this story is canonical and meant to be an add-on to the TV series, though it is hard to tell exactly where this story would fit in timeline-wise. It's one problem, but not an insurmountable one.
The story mostly resolves around the hunt for the Coins of Zakynthos, which can convey great power to anyone who holds them, which is why Nick Burkhardt and his team must destroy them. The coins were introduced to the Grimm back story some time ago, but has recently received less plot time than the Adalind baby plot (and if you don't know what that is then why are you reading this comic?). Nick, Hank and Monroe travel to Europe after receiving a message from Nick's mother. They team up with her and the Wesen resistance against the Royals and their hunting dogs, along with another mysterious female Grimm Maya, who needless to say, is not to be trusted.
The artwork on this is pretty good, with most of the characters being recognisable with the exception of Nick, but the actor that plays him is pretty bland in looks anyway, so this isn't much of an issue. I have more of a problem with the depiction of Maya in stilettos and stockings, and what's with the "Fwrum" sound that every Wesen makes when they Woge (change into their beast form)? It's nice to see Nick's mum Kelly return to the story, after being missing for most of season 3 (as I type this the character is about to return in the next episode), and Hank and Monroe make a pretty good backup team. I would have liked to have seen more of the other characters in the series (Juliette is entirely absent).
There is a single prologue story that involves a Wesen wedding, which has nice resonances with the Monroe and Roselee wedding plans.
Overall, not a bad story. 3 stars

I decided to give this a shot since the series has been on for a few years and thought I could use it as a quick way to see if it is something I want to try and catch up on. The setup is interesting and and I even after finishing it I think I would want to watch the series since I know there was so much that had to be left out of the graphic novel. A good read and you don't have to know anything about the series to start reading the book.
