my first book by t kingfisher and certainly not the last. the dialogue was super witty and i was so invested in the saints paladins.
the awkward situations between grace and stephen were making me crack up from the jump, starting with bad porn acting with chainmail chaffing and ending in a cute ass relationship, adorable
so refreshing seeing not only protags older than 25, but also i was overjoyed at the nonbinary side character rep

Somehow I forgot this was a romantasy between placing my hold on Libby and getting the book. It was a pleasant surprise!
Overall I think it was a good book! I really enjoyed listening to it. Stephen and Grace were really interesting and complex MCs. It was fun to follow them and uncover more about their histories and see how they function in the situation thrust upon them. Not only that, but I really enjoyed each character’s personal arc. Stephen grappling with his grief, struggle with losing his god, and how it’s bonded him so deeply to the other paladins was really compelling. I also loved learning more about Grace’s past and seeing her grow and overcome it.
The characters being so well written and compelling really sold me on the romance and its development. While it moved a little quickly for my taste, I still loved every minute. I thought it was really sweet and the conflict keeping them from being together was understandable. It didn’t frustrate me like some others do.
The book did have its flaws though. I don’t think the book balanced the three plot lines very well. It left me feeling dissatisfied by the conclusion. Also, while I loved the narrator’s voice, I think his delivery was a bit lacking in feeling.
Overall it was a really enjoyable romantasy. I definitely recommend checking it out!

I really enjoyed the book. The lack of self-confidence in the characters was a bit overdone but mostly believable. My only complaint would be that some of the plot points remained unexplained, I hope the sequels will solve that though.

Lot's of sexual tension in this book. If you are into slow(ish) burn romances, this is a good book for you. Both main characters are struggling with their own internal issues. Both get tied up in a mystery. I wish the conflict had been resolved a little differently and had less behind the scenes that was explained later on, but not everything was resolved and I am very excited to learn more about the mystery in the next book.

If you liked A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive baking, you’ll probably enjoy this book. They had very similar tones, although Paladin’s Grace is very clearly aimed at adults.

Although it took me a bit to get into it, I found it to be an enjoyable romantic fantasy in the end.

“If we limited loving to just the sane, undamaged people, the next generation would have about three people in it and presumably humanity would die out shortly afterward.”
― T. Kingfisher, Paladin’s Grace

What more could you ask for in a romantasy than: a dead god, gentle paladins, berserkers, a not "normal" perfumer, spies, assassins, religious fanatics, and decapitated heads? Follow two awkward middle-aged protagonists and side characters (+ a pet civet) in their profoundly funny banter as they navigate and survive the political machinations surrounding them; and fall in love.

*bonus quote
“Look, if you can't laugh about the homicidal fits that make you a menace to society, what's even the point?”
― T. Kingfisher, Paladin’s Grace
