After getting the first two volumes of the Earth One series for Xmas the other day and loving it, I decided to start delving into the world of other graphic novels featuring the man of steel. The guy in the store recommended I try this story as it is a good stand book to start with. The story was quite good, I learnt a bit more of general Zod and the phantom zone, however I preferred the artwork of the earth one series. I get it, each has a different style and for that reason I still gave it 4 stars. Worth a read.

The concept of Clark and Lois being parents was so new and interesting when this story first came out and at the time I really hoped DC would have done more with that. I am so glad Jon Kent exists and we have those stories now because it really ads an interesting dynamic and allows the characters to grow in fun and interesting ways.

The Brainiac story is also great. Even if it is essentially just the set up for a much larger story, I always love a good Superman vs. Brainiac tilt.

Eh, okay I guess. I understand it's hard to make Superman a compelling character so it's good not to be total garbage.

I do have some complaints, though. On one of the story arcs, a kid-aged Kryptonian lands, and they decide that the best way to keep him safe is to have him adopted by Clark Kent and Lois Lane, with paperwork forged by Batman. They disguise him by making him wear glasses. That's it, that's the whole disguise, for a person that's been headline news. I suspend disbelief of Superman keeping a secret identity in such a lazy way, but really, the same gimmick twice?

In another arc, he fights Brainiac, a hyperintelligent alien being that has collected countless civilizations, and he beats him by getting angry and punching super hard. Really?

I do have to say that this volume had my favorite onomatopoeia. Supes got bonked over the head with a chunk of crystal and for some reason the noise it made was "FWAACKKO."

I need some Superman reading to get me out of a start-of-winter funk. Last Son is a great start, the art style is fantastic. Hooplah's action reader really drew me into each panel. Felt like a familiar story, but very enjoyable regardless. Didn't quite have the depth that Red Son did, but a few surprises along the way. I wanted it to be longer!

The first installment in the New Krypton arc was fantastic. It kicks it off really well, setting everything up nicely--Nightwing/Chris Kent, Mon-El, the Phantom Zone, Kandor, and Zod, Ursa, and Non. I didn't realize this was the first in the arc until I was already into it. A lot that I've already seen before makes a bit more sense now.
Geoff Johns and company set the tune with a darker Superman. He and Lois adopt the son of General Zod and Ursa, naming him Chris Kent. This Superman is willing to go further, not being as much of a boy scout.

I liked the art but the scenario was very generic superhero stuff. Oh, well...what did I expect anyway?

A remake of sorts of the movie Superman II, better than the movie and a pretty good tale.

An epic story with potential world-ending stakes, but a surprising amount of heart. Some beautiful character moments between Martha and Jonathan Kent, and some very nice exploration of parenthood with Clark and Lois. This one breaks all the stereotypes of what people assume comic books to be.

If all comics are like this then count me in.

OMG! so many sad endings!!! Seriously, needed tissues. The title Last Son has multiple meanings. Still, well written and a great story!
