This book took some time to get me interested. I did enjoy it, but would probably not recommend it to anyone I know. I am a little surprised by the cult following of this book, which I clearly do not understand ;)

I didn't want to like this book. It felt a bit too much like A Diary of A Wimpy Kid but for adults (maybe a bit of The Catcher in the Rye mixed in?). It's a fictional diary about a teenager who is brutally honest and draws cartoons. However, the story sucked me in.

Junior lives on a Spokane Indian reservation. He describes "the rez" as a place filled with alcoholism, depression, gambling, and death. Before the story is over, Junior will attend several funerals. With a bit of nudging from a teacher, he decides to leave "the rez" and go to a white public school (whose mascot is, ironically, "The Indians"). His tribe rejects him for trying to be white. The whites at the school reject him for being an Indian. Junior must find a way to survive the tension.
