Kerry is presented with a choice: either take the long, safe path home in order to save his parents or the short one through the Forest of Shadows and get there with time to spare...
So begins Kerry's adventure through the mythical forest in which an old knight is there is to guide him (if Kerry can find him) and a strange, magical blight sits in wait, waiting to claim the young boy's soul for itself.
With nods towards Henson's Labyrinth and other gentler, coming-of-age fantasy quest stories, Watson's graphic novel tells the story of a young protagonist faced with big decisions about life although, perhaps, with a slight twist in that, for a large part, Kerry teaches the old knight lessons too. Kerry might be naive about many things but when it comes to love and trust, he seems to be worldly-wise. With a lovely message about gifting everyone with the chance to make the right choice, Kerry and the Knight of the Forest is a sweet story with a satisfying ending.
I enjoyed Watson's simple yet bold styling of the forest which suited it well and found the pace was good. The book ends with a series of Top Trumps based on the characters within and some concept artwork too.

My favorite thing about this graphic novel was the artwork--it is eye catching and very textural. It is a lighter text novel, and a lot of the storytelling is visual. About 2/3 of the way through I started to feel a little frustrated by the problem/solution repetitive nature, and the final conflict is resolved quite quickly, but I still enjoyed the journey narrative and themes of kindness and benefits of being generous rather than approaching the world with distrust.
