It's a good book. It is a cute story. The main character, January, she's a bit dramatic and self-centered. She's an only-child, so I guess she is a really well-written only-child. I just didn't really like her all that much.
I enjoyed the book overall. I think it does read like a "first book." I read Book Lovers and it's got a similar feel to it, but it reads better IMO.
I was invested in the story, I wanted to know what happened to January and Gus. I enjoyed the tid-bits about the books they were writing as well.
Okay ending- or maybe I just don't like happy endings... *winky face*

CW: Mentions Of Cheating, Sexual Content, Alcohol

4 / 5 Stars

Overall, I didn't really have any specific issues with this one. It was mostly an enjoyable read - especially when you're an author yourself. But I also didn’t really get what people thaught was so special about it that it deserved to be a Goodreads Choice Awards Winner.

There were a few things that bothered me, but that are - mostly - personal pet peeves. So I get if not everyone is ready read a 3 page long essay about how I hate when books think sex is a good way to comfort a sad /depressed person who's having a melt down. :) They don’t end up having the sex - because the delivery boy interrupts them with the pizza they ordered - but boy, let me tell you, I was ready to throw hands.
We also make a random off comment about the importance of a girls GAY male best friend in romantic comedies, which caused me to groan even loader. Especially since we have two married, elder queer women and I didn't expect to find this idiocy in a book that's trying to be supportive.

The main couple was fine. They had great banter. But I could have done without them having to explain how they are "damaged good" and "broken" - during multible occasions. Like. Dude. Calm the fuck down. You got dumped. And you girl, learned your dad was a cheater. You're not broken. Not even close. But feel free to feel special, I guess.

There are 3 Labrador Retriever in this. I'm telling you, because when we meet them, they are used as the butt of the joke, because it's apparently funny that they are farting a lot.

I did like stuff, in case you were curious. But I didn't feel like I could ignore the things that bothered me.

The side cast is really nice as well - even though I think Sonya deserved better.

Also Also:
German Cover >>>> OG Cover. And that's a fact.

Final Thoughts:

The couple was cute.

it’s always books with the silly little cartoon character covers that end up shattering your heart. what a feat of the genre.

Relatable and complicated characters, believable romance, a bit of spice...this story has everything! Just a very sweet story where enemies become friends ultimately become lovers. What's not to love?
