Nicely written, interesting characters and viewpoints, but I can't help feeling like it missed some of its potential.
The world-building seemed to me like it couldn't really decide how many fantasy elements it wants to incoperate, so I felt left with a story that kind of focuses on witchcraft, but also doesn't leave it enough room to fully unfold it's magic.
Overall this book feels like there could have been so many cool elements explored in this story that don't really get the stage for it - like it's the first of a trilogy which could actually focus in depth on witchcraft, the fantasy aspects and the true villain.

Slow pace through much of the beginning to establish the many plot threads and historical details of New York City in the 1880s. The rich details of place and Victorian culture are one of the book’s strengths. Another is the fascinating and believable details on Eleanor’s herbal kitchen witch practice. Eleanor is a good character, Adelaide is a bit obnoxious, and Beatrice is, unfortunately, such a “Mary Sue” (i.e., two-dimensionally perfect) that she’s uninteresting). The pace is slow and meandering, picking up speed toward the ending. Fans of Dark Academia fiction might enjoy this. But so many loose ends trail off, unresolved! I suspect the author wanted to do a sequel but maybe her publisher quashed it because it’s been ten years since publication.

It started off slow for me and unfortunately, I got Eleanor and Adelaide confused several times.

But once I got to the middle then it picked up. I think the last quarter of the book with the preacher was the worst because he was an odious character.

Anyway, I recently discovered that there is another book. So, I guess I will check it out and read it.
